Deutsche Luftfahrt Segelflieger Visor Hat
In 1933 a German sports club called the Deutsche Luftfahrt, or DL, was founded. The club helped train pilots in secret for the future German air force, focusing both on motorized aircraft and gliders.1 Featured here is a DL visor hat worn by a glider pilot. On the front is a metal badge used by members of the DL as well as the Deutsche Luftsportverband (German Air Sport Organization), or DLV.2 The insignia consists of a swastika superimposed over a propeller with outstretched wings. Surrounding the propeller is a red ring. A German national tricolor cockade rests above the DL badge. The hat contains a dark blue mohair hatband, signifying that this was a glider pilot in the DL. The rest of the hat is gray-blue.3 The chinstrap includes a single snap at one end. On the inside of the hat is stitching for a sweat diamond, but the diamond itself is missing.
