WHRC Receives New Artifacts from Hermann Historica Auction
On July 15, 2010, the Wilson History and Research Center received a new shipment of artifacts from a Hermann Historica auction held on April 15-16 in Munich, Germany. The auction included an assortment of items from the Weimar Republic (1918-1933) through the reign of Nazi Germany ending with World War II (1939-1945). Following the WHRC charter of collecting headgear from the twentieth century, the majority of the items selected were a wide range of cloth headgear and helmets worn in Germany between 1933 and 1945. Most of these items included visors, side caps, and helmets worn by members of the Luftwaffe, Heer, Kriegsmarine, and various civil organizations, some with the proper matching uniform.
The WHRC also acquired a variety of badges, documents, edged weapons, and medals from the auction. Consisting of everything from officer dress swords to Iron Crosses and signed documents from high-ranking members of the SS, including Sepp Dietrich and Theodor Eicke, these new items provide a look into a time when the Nazi Party ruled Germany. Two of the most interesting items are a pair of double binoculars (Doppelfernglas DF 12 20×40) with a tripod stand measuring almost forty-five inches tall and a small booklet entitled Der Lohn Der Tat (The Reward of Deeds) that chronicles the various awards given to the German soldier.
